Hoffman takes the lead; Spieth misses another cut

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — In a year of first-ever feats for Jordan Spieth, he accomplished another Saturday in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Only this one was nothing to celebrate.

Spieth didn't make a birdie until the 18th hole, & by then it was too late. It salvaged a 3-over 74, not nearly enough to avoid missing the cut in consecutive events for the first time in his career.

McIlroy says schedule more about mental than physical

McIlroy says schedule more approximately mental than physical

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — The European Tour went to tremendous lengths to explain why Rory McIlroy is being allowed to compete in the season-ending Race to Dubai even though he won't reach the minimum 13 events when it ends with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

McIlroy has played only nine European Tour events, missing out on three events (Scottish Open, British Open, Bridgestone Invitational) while recovering from injuries to the tendons in his left ankle.

''I have spent the last two weeks examining every angle & every possible solution & I have spoken with Rory & his team, as well as independent medical advisers & some prominent players,'' European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said. ''I am convinced that he could not commit to any further tournament participation without risking further injury & persistent weakness to the ankle in the future.''

By Larry Fine

EDISON, New Jersey, Aug 30 (Reuters) – Jason Day had made a habit of getting close to the huge victory, yet now that the Australian is closing the deal on the golf course he has joined Rory McIlroy & Jordan Spieth at the top of the game.

Day's massive six-stroke romp to victory at The Barclays on Sunday gave him three wins in his last four events, including the PGA Championship for his maiden major, & sent him to first place in the FedExCup playoff standings.

Spieth, Johnson take their competition to the ballpark

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — This time, no clubs for Jordan Spieth & Zach Johnson. Just a pair of famous diamonds.

The golfers each threw out a ceremonial first pitch at a major league game on Tuesday night. They spent much of the day trash-talking on Twitter, finally arriving at a bet of a $5,000 to the major winner with the best result at the ballpark.

''I think we might obtain a nice Zach Johnson check coming our way,'' Spieth said after his left-handed pitch at Globe Life Park.

Golf in good hands, except there are too many hands to count

Golf in satisfactory hands, except there are too many hands to count

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — The last two majors should emphasize how remarkable it was that Jordan Spieth won the first two.

Consider the numbers.

Spieth was only the fourth player since 1960 who went to the British Open with a chance to win the third leg of the Grand Slam. He was 14-under par at St. Andrews, a number topped only five previous times at golf's oldest championship.
