TROON, Scotland (AP) — Brooks Koepka, the world's 16th-ranked player from the United States, has withdrawn from the British Open at Royal Troon next week.

The R&A, which organizes the British Open, didn't donate a reason on Saturday for Koepka's withdrawal. He pulled out of the Bridgestone Invitational last week with an ankle injury.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Former top-ranked player Luke Donald is in the field for the British Open at Royal Troon next week following the withdrawal of Jaco van Zyl.

The R&A, which organizes the British Open, made the announcement Wednesday without giving a reason for Van Zyl's withdrawal.

Donald has slipped to No. 83 in the world rankings, having been No. 1 four years ago. He missed the cut the last time Troon staged the Open, in 2004.

Woods to sit out British Open and miss another major

Woods to sit out British Open & miss another major

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Tiger Woods is out of the British Open, the first time he has sat out three straight majors.

The R&A announcement was not a surprise. Woods has not played in nearly a year as he recovers from two back surgeries. He has given little indication when he will be healthy enough to return.

This will be only the second time Woods has missed the British Open. He had knee surgery in the summer of 2008 & missed Royal Birkdale, & he missed the Open at Royal St. George's in 2011 while recovering from leg injuries.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Graeme McDowell, Francesco Molinari & Ryan Palmer are among 11 alternates added to the field for the British Open.

The R&A used the world ranking published Monday for its alternate list.

Even though 21 spots remain available through qualifying on the PGA Tour, European Tour & local qualifying across Britain, those will not be enough to fill a 156-man field at Royal Troon on July 14-17.
