Soccer-Barca's Rafinha to have surgery on injured knee

MADRID, Sept 17 (Reuters) – Barcelona midfielder Rafinha will undergo surgery after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League Group E draw at AS Roma.

The Brazil international had only been on the pitch for a few minutes when he was injured by a robust tackle from behind by Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan.

Barca said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es) on Thursday Rafinha, the younger brother of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, would have the operation in the next few days.

Hong Kong (AFP) – Luiz Felipe Scolari's Guangzhou Evergrande expect to sweep into the AFC Champions League semi-finals when they host Kashiwa Reysol on Tuesday with their free-scoring Brazilian contingent in top form.

Guangzhou's boys from Brazil scored all three goals in Saturday's 3-0 romp against Shanghai SIPG which saw the southern side replace Sven Goran-Eriksson's men at the top of the Chinese Super League.

Robinho, Ricardo Goulart & Elkeson were all on target, while ex-Tottenham Hotspur acquisition Paulinho scored a 40-yard screamer in last month's 3-1 quarter-final first leg win at Kashiwa.

MADRID, Sept 10 (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid will be looking to some of their new signings to assist see off Barcelona when the champions visit the Calderon in La Liga on Saturday, according to fullback Filipe Luis.

Atletico were one of Spain's most active clubs in the latest transfer window, bringing in the likes of Colombia striker Jackson Martinez, Argentine forward Luciano Vietto & Belgium midfielder Yannick Carrasco.

Spanish playmaker Oliver Torres returned from a loan spell at Porto, while Filipe Luis was purchased back from Chelsea after one season in London.

London (AFP) – Gary Lineker believes Wayne Rooney will be England's leading goal-scorer for "a long time" after the Manchester United striker netted a record-breaking 50th international goal against Switzerland.

Rooney's late penalty in Tuesday's 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley eclipsed Bobby Charlton's 45-year-old mark of 49 & left him two goals in front of Lineker, who scored 48 England goals between 1984 & 1992.

With Rooney not yet 30 & the second-highest scorer in the current England set-up, Danny Welbeck, having only scored 14 international goals, Lineker believes it will be a while before the captain's tally is bettered.

A dismal 4-1 exhibition loss to Brazil on Tuesday night left the United States facing a month of questions ahead of its playoff against Mexico on Oct. 10 for the region's berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

(Reuters) – Substitute Neymar scored two second-half goals to inspire Brazil to a 4-1 win over the United States in Massachusetts on Tuesday.

The Barcelona striker came on at half time with his ahead 1-0 quickly doubling their lead with a penalty then grabbed his 46th international goal in 67 international appearances a few minutes later.
