Bild score own-goal with fans over refugee campaign

Berlin (AFP) – Newspaper Bild scored an own goal with Germany's football fans after criticising Hamburg-based St Pauli for starting a partial boycott of a Bundesliga-wide campaign supporting the nation's refugees.

The newspaper, backed by the German Football League (DFL) & Bundesliga sponsors Hermes, launched a campaign to obtain all 36 clubs in Germany's top two tiers to wear a badge with 'We're helping – #refugeeswelcome' on the sleeves of their playing shirts for this weekend only.

At face-value, the campaign appears to be an honourable initiative to encourage fans to do their part to assist aid new arrivals in the country.

Berlin (AFP) – Thomas Tuchel's arrival at Borussia Dortmund following the departure of Juergen Klopp has revitalised the Westphalian club after a very underwhelming 2014-15 campaign.

Dortmund are the league's early pacesetters, above Bayern Munich on goal difference, after thumping wins over Borussia Moenchengladbach, newcomers Ingolstadt & Hertha Berlin with a trip to lowly Hanover awaiting them on Saturday.

However, Marco Reus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang & Lukasz Piszczek all returned prematurely from international duty due to injury with their status for the weekend up in the air.

St. Pauli to play Dortmund with motto 'Refugees Welcome'

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — German second-division side St. Pauli has given its club friendly against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday the motto ''Refugees Welcome.''

The Hamburg-based club says the game will ''set a sign & play its part in establishing a welcoming culture for those who have fled to Germany.''

Around 1,000 migrants in various accommodations around Hamburg are to be invited, as well as ''many dedicated volunteers.''

Berlin (AFP) – Australia winger Robbie Kruse will join Socceroos team-mate Mitchell Langerak at VfB Stuttgart this season after being loaned out for a year by Bayer Leverkusen on Monday.

Kruse came off the bench for the second-half of Leverkusen's 3-0 German league defeat at Bayern Munich on Saturday, yet it proved to be his final appearance in the Bayer shirt this season.

The 26-year-old has had a tough three years at Leverkusen, where he has a contract until 2017, since his arrival from Fortuna Duesseldorf in 2013.

United loan Januzaj to Dortmund

Berlin (AFP) – Manchester United's Belgium forward Adnan Januzaj has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for a season, the German club confirmed on Monday.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who was in the Belgium squad for the 2014 World Cup & has made 47 appearances for United in the Premier League, has signed until next June.

"Borussia Dortmund is a huge club & the fans here are unbelievable. I want to have a lot of success with this team," said Januzaj.

BERLIN, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Bayer Leverkusen have signed Slovenia international Kevin Kampl from Borussia Dortmund as they seek to replace striker Son Heung-min who joined Tottenham, the club said on Friday.

Leverkusen, who will face holders Barcelona, AS Roma & BATE Borisov in their Champions League Group E, said the 24-year-old attacking midfielder signed a five-year deal.

Kampl had played as a teenager for Leverkusen before stints at several lower tier German clubs, Salzburg, where he played under current Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt, & then joined Borussia Dortmund at the start of this year.
