NEW YORK (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki was overwhelmed by the outpouring of appreciation he received from the Yankees after he received his 4,000th hit between the major leagues & Japan in the first inning.

The celebration after Alfonso Soriano’s tiebreaking homer in the eighth was pretty nice, too.

Soriano connected off R.A. Dickey with two outs in the eighth inning Wednesday night, lifting New York to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays for Toronto’s 12th straight loss at Yankee Stadium.

Soriano has 2-run HR in 8th to lead Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) — Alfonso Soriano hit a tiebreaking two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, Ichiro Suzuki received his 4,000th hit between the major leagues & Japan, & the Yankees handed the Toronto Blue Jays their 12th straight loss in New York, 4-2 on Wednesday night.

David Huff (1-0) pitched one-hit ball in five innings of relief to shut down the Blue Jays before New York finally received to Toronto’s R.A. Dickey.

The 39-year-old Suzuki hit a liner off Dickey (9-12) that bounced just beyond diving third baseman Brett Lawrie for the milestone hit in the first inning. Suzuki broke a tie with Lou Gehrig when he received his 2,722nd major league hit in his 13th season. The speedy outfielder amassed 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix of Japan’s Pacific League.

Yankees rally for sweep of DH over the Blue Jays

NEW YORK (AP) — Jayson Nix hit a tying homer in the seventh inning & a game-ending single in the ninth, lifting the Yankees to their second comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, 3-2 in the nightcap for a doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, Robinson Cano & Chris Stewart each hit three-run homers to rally the Yankees from four runs down to beat the Blue Jays 8-4. Toronto lost slugger Jose Bautista to a sore hip early in the game.

Cano had an RBI single in the second game & had six hits & five RBIs for New York in the two games.

Blue Jays' Bautista leaves game with sore left hip

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista has left the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees because of soreness in his left hip.

Bautista was replaced in right field to start the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday. He grounded out in the first & walked in the Blue Jays’ four-run second inning.

Rajai Davis moved from center field to right to start the fourth. Anthony Gose entered in center field.
