Austria captain Christian Fuchs retires from national team

VIENNA (AP) — Austria captain Christian Fuchs is retiring from the national team, a week after Austria was eliminated from the European Championship.

In a video posted on his Facebook page Wednesday, the Leicester defender said the 2-1 loss to Iceland ''was my last match in red-white-red.''

''Looking back I have to say I am very proud of the 10 years I played for the team,'' said Fuchs, who was named captain by coach Marcel Koller four years ago.

Tiny Iceland beats Austria 2-1 to set up England clash

PARIS (AP) — Iceland, the smallest nation at the European Championship, delivered the feel-good story of the tournament by beating Austria 2-1 on Wednesday to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Iceland's victory, which came deep in stoppage time, has earned the team a mouthwatering round of 16 match against England in Nice Monday – a prospect previously described as a ''dream'' by captain Aron Gunnarsson.

Arnor Ingvi Traustason sealed the win for Iceland in the fourth minute of injury time following a classic counter attack as Austria pressed for a winner that would have seen it qualify for the next round of Euro 2016.

China's Wu wins in Austria for 2nd European Tour title

ATZENBRUGG, Austria (AP) — China's Wu Ashun came from a stroke behind to win the Lyoness Open on Sunday for his second career European Tour title.

Wu, who moreover won the China Open last year, had a 69 including seven birdies to complete with a 13-under 275. He was one stroke clear of first-day leader Adrian Otaegui of Spain with Richard McEvoy of England another stroke back in third.

Wu trailed Zander Lombard of South Africa going into the final round yet picked up three shots on the first four holes. He after carded a double-bogey on the par-4 10th yet held on for the victory as Lombard dropped to fifth with a 2-over 74.

Austria defeated 2-0 by Netherlands in Euro 2016 warmup

VIENNA (AP) — Austria slumped to a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands in its final warmup before the European Championship on Saturday.

Poor defending by the hosts allowed striker Vincent Janssen to open the scoring in the ninth minute, & Georginio Wijnaldum doubled the lead in the 66th after being set up by Luuk de Jong, who replaced Janssen a minute earlier.

Austria dominated the opening half hour, looking versatile in attack with lots of movement & quick passing.

Berlin (AFP) – Werder Bremen scored two goals in injury time to earn a 3-1 win at Hoffenheim while Schalke 04 shook off an early missed penalty to down Mainz 05 2-1 in Bundesliga action on Sunday.

Austria international Zlatko Junuzovic had given Werder the lead in the last minute of the first half before scoring the clinching third three minutes into injury time at the end of the game.

Second-half substitute Eduardo Vargas had equalised for Hoffenheim on 49 minutes yet Nigerian forward Anthony Ujah put the visitors back in front two minutes into time added on, converting a pass from 37-year-old Claudio Pizzaro.

MADRID (AP) — A record-breaking goal by Wayne Rooney kept England's winning streak going in European Championship qualifying on Tuesday, while Austria qualified for a major tournament for the first time in 18 years by securing its place at next year's finals in France.

Rooney scored his 50th international goal by converting a late penalty at Wembley Stadium to seal England's 2-0 win over Switzerland & break Bobby Charlton's 45-year-old record.

''To be the country's all-time leading goalscorer before the age of 30 is not something I could ever have dreamed of,'' the 29-year-old Rooney said. ''I was a bit emotional out there & it's something to be extremely proud of. I'm pleased it's done & hopefully I can kick on from here & concentrate on the team & our success in the future.''

Austria rout Sweden to qualify for Euro 2016

Solna (Sweden) (AFP) – Austria will appear at only their second European Championships finals after their 4-1 thrashing of Sweden secured their place at next year's finals in France on Tuesday in Solna.

Swiss coach & former international midfielder Marcel Koller guided the Austrians to a place in France after their maiden appearance at the final stages in 2008 when they automatically qualified as co-hosts with Switzerland.

Bayern Munich's David Alaba, the youngest player to ever play for Austria at 17 in 2009, scored from the penalty spot after just nine minutes before West German-born Martin Harnik plundered his 12th international goal, seven minutes before half-time with a header, to donate the visitors a cushion.
