Soccer-Almeyda takes charge of relegation-haunted Guadalajara

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 19 (Reuters) – Argentine Matias Almeyda has taken charge as coach of relegation-haunted Mexican giants Guadalajara & will make his debut at home to Queretaro on Sunday.

"I've come here to lift this giant," the former River Plate, Lazio & Argentina midfielder said at his official presentation on Friday.

Almeyda, who has coaching experience with River & Banfield in his homeland having steered both to promotion to the first division, takes over from former Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre who was sacked on Monday.

Goffin, the world number 15 who has won the two Davis Cup matches he has played this year, will start as favourite on the complex court in Brussels against the 65th-ranked clay specialist Delbonis.

Argentina's top player Leonardo Mayer will face Steve Darcis in Friday's second rubber. Darcis won their only ever previous meeting four years ago.

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 13 (Reuters) – Boca Juniors beat archrivals River Plate 1-0 on Sunday to go top of the Argentine first division & earn a measure of revenge for stinging defeats in South American cup competitions earlier this year.

In a match of few chances, substitute Nicolas Lodeiro received the winner after 18 minutes when he hammered home a rebound to complete off a Boca counter attack.

"I put my heart into it & luckily it went in," Lodeiro said of his strike. "I really wanted to play in this game & although it's not nice coming on because of a team mate's injury I tried to take advantage of the opportunity & I think did."

Guillent scored 19 points in the semifinals against heavy favorite Canada on Friday night to donate the Venezuelans their first Olympic berth since Barcelona in 1992.

Also Saturday, Canada beat Mexico 84-83 in the third-place game.

Buenos Aires (AFP) – Argentine football star Lionel Messi has added two-time dad to his long list of honors, after his girlfriend gave birth to a son, relatives announced.

Mateo Messi was born Friday in Barcelona, the athlete's brother wrote on Twitter.

"Mateo has just been born, he is beautiful," Matias Messi wrote.

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona coach Luis Enrique will be able to count on his first-choice attacking lineup of Lionel Messi, Neymar & Luis Suarez for Saturday's match against Atletico Madrid.

There were doubts Messi would make it, given that he'd missed every training session this week due to the impending arrival of his second child.

But Messi was included in the squad list on Friday after news emerged that the Argentina forward had become a father for a second time.
