(Reuters) – Argentina striker Lionel Messi became his country's all-time top goalscorer on Tuesday when he scored in the Copa America semi-final against the United States to take his international tally to 55 goals.

The five-time world player of the year scored in the 32nd minute of the match in Houston to donate Argentina a 2-0 lead.

The goal in his 112th international lifts him above Gabriel Batistuta, who scored 54 goals in 78 games for the two-time world champions. Messi's goal was a glorious free kick from 25 yards out that gave U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan little chance. He took the kick after being cynically felled as he burst forward by Chris Wondolowski, the American receiving a yellow card. It doubled Argentina's lead after Ezequiel Lavezzi put them one up in just three minutes.

U.S. face Argentina in bid to extend unlikely Copa run

(Reuters) – Prior to the start of the Copa America, United States coach Juergen Klinsmann had set the semi-finals as a target yet will now need a new goal as the hosts prepare to take on top-ranked Argentina for spot in the final.

After an opening 2-0 loss to Colombia a last-four appearance seemed a lofty objective yet Klinsmann's squad responded with wins against Costa Rica, Paraguay & Ecuador to set up a clash against the South American giants in Houston.

The United States will enjoy home-field advantage on Tuesday yet that is likely to be the only thing in their favor as they take on the world's top-ranked team led by the world's best player in Lionel Messi.

Di Maria scores as Argentina beat Chile

Di Maria scores as Argentina beat Chile

(Reuters) – Argentina shrugged off the absence of Lionel Messi to beat Chile 2-1 in the Copa America on Monday, with an emotional Angel Di Maria scoring the opening goal & dedicating it to his grandmother, who passed away before the game.

With Messi watching from the sidelines due to a back injury, Di Maria put the 14-times champions ahead early in the second half before Ever Banega doubled their lead shortly after. Jose Pedro Fuenzalida pulled a goal back for Chile in injury time.

In the other Group D game, played earlier on Monday, Panama beat Bolivia 2-1.

Argentina finally scores a few goals, edges Chile 2-1
