LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Liriano came through with the kind of effort the Pittsburgh Pirates are going to need down the stretch & in the postseason – especially when they face the aces on other teams.

Liriano outpitched reigning NL MVP Clayton Kershaw, & Aramis Ramirez hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning as the Pirates ended a four-game skid with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

''Frankie gave us just what we needed,'' manager Clint Hurdle said. ''For me, this was as satisfactory a game as he's pitched all year. His fastball played extremely well for him, & the velocity was peak. It was so effective, so tough to lay off of.''

Pirates activate 3B Josh Harrison from disabled list

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates activated utility player Josh Harrison off the disabled list Friday after a nearly two-month stay following thumb surgery.

Harrison went out after sustaining ligament damage to his left thumb in early July. He was batting .279 with four homers & 22 RBIs at the time of the injury. Harrison, an All-Star in 2014, went 1 for 19 during a rehab stint with Triple-A Indianapolis. He will bat leadoff on Friday night against San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner.

The Pirates have added significant infield depth in Harrison's absence, acquiring third baseman Aramis Ramirez & first baseman Michael Morse before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Pirates acquire Aramis Ramirez from Brewers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aramis Ramirez is back where he once belonged.

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired the veteran third baseman on Thursday, 12 years to the day after they sent Ramirez to the Chicago Cubs. The Pirates received the 37-year-old three-time All-Star in exchange for minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios.

The Pirates, who will moreover receive cash considerations in the trade, were in desperate need of infield assist with regular third baseman Josh Harrison & shortstop Jordy Mercer both out at least another month with injuries. Pittsburgh began Thursday trailing St. Louis by six games in the NL Central following a 1-5 road trip coming out of the All-Star break.

''No matter who we beat, a win's a win. We could obtain on a nice little roll & make it interesting,'' Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson said. ''Everybody's received the right mindset in here. It was a tough first half. But that was the first half. We've flushed that with the All-Star break & started off pretty good.''

While he didn't hit the ball complex in the bottom of the eighth, his bouncer found just the right spot inside the third-base bag to trickle into left field with two outs. Shane Peterson scored the go-ahead run from third, capping the Milwaukee Brewers' rally from a four-run deficit for a 6-5 victory Thursday night over the Washington Nationals.

Ryan Braun, Adam Lind & Aramis Ramirez hit consecutive home runs in a six run-third inning, Jimmy Nelson pitched eight strong innings, & the Brewers beat the Tigers 8-1 Tuesday night.

Braun drove in four runs & Carlos Gomez had three hits & two RBIs for Milwaukee, which has won the first two games of the three-game series.

PHOENIX (AP) — It's never effortless for a baseball player to leave his family for six weeks of spring training, no matter how nice the weather is in Arizona.

This year, though, was harder than most for Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez. And on Friday, he said he wouldn't be doing it anymore.

''When I was leaving this year, I don't think I can do that again,'' he said Friday. ''I promised my daughter this is the last time I'll leave her.''

Brewers exercise Gallardo's option, decline Weeks

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Brewers exercised right-hander Yovani Gallardo's $13 million option for next year & their half of third baseman Aramis Ramirez's $14 million option.

Milwaukee moreover announced Friday it had voided Rickie Weeks' $11.5 million salary for 2015, making the second baseman eligible for free agency. The Brewers had the right to void the salary because Weeks did not have 1,200 plate appearances in 2013-14 combined, with at least 600 this year.

Ramirez has until Monday to exercise his half of the mutual option.
