AP source: 49ers trade LB Haralson to Saints

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the trade says the San Francisco 49ers have sent linebacker Parys Haralson to the New Orleans Saints, who are in desperate need at the position as a pair of would-be starters are sidelined with knee injuries.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday night because neither team had announced the trade. It wasn’t clear what compensation the 49ers would receive in return.

Haralson departed San Francisco team headquarters Monday night after saying his goodbyes before the team began a late practice, acknowledging that he had been traded while providing no further details other than, ”I’m outta here.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans outside linebacker Will Smith, one of the Saints’ top pass-rushers during the past nine seasons, has a knee injury that will sideline him for the 2013 season, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the team has not commented publicly on Smith’s injury, which occurred Sunday during an exhibition game against Houston.

Smith, drafted 18th overall by New Orleans in 2004, spent his first nine seasons as a defensive end. This year, he switched to outside linebacker in new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme.

MIAMI (AP) — A person with knowledge of the decision says cornerback Richard Marshall has been released by the Miami Dolphins.

The person confirmed the move to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t made an announcement Tuesday.

Marshall started four games for Miami last year, yet spent the final two months of the season on injured reserve with a back injury. The eighth-year pro has moreover played for Carolina & Arizona.

LONDON (AP) — Robin van Persie held off last year’s winner Lionel Messi to earn player of the week honors in the first round of The Associated Press global soccer poll.

Both players scored twice, yet Van Persie’s acrobatic volley & long-range goal in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Swansea in the Premier League gave the Dutchman the edge over Messi by 10 points.

Monaco forward Emmanuel Riviere, who scored his first career hat trick in the 4-1 win over Montpellier in the French league, finished third.

MIAMI (AP) — Dustin Keller will miss the entire season with a knee injury that leaves the Miami Dolphins without much experience at tight end, a position in which they were counting on an upgrade to enliven their offense in 2013.

Keller seriously injured his right knee during Saturday’s preseason game at Houston, two people familiar with the diagnosis said Sunday. They confirmed the extent of the injury on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins made no public comment.

Keller signed a $4.25 million, one-year contract with the Dolphins in March after five seasons with the New York Jets. His injury represents a significant setback for the Dolphins, who acquired Keller to replace tight end Tony Fasano & assist second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

MASON, Ohio (AP) — The vintage rematch ended with Rafael Nadal pumping his arms after a final forehand. He was a little bit better than old nemesis Roger Federer once again.

Nadal advanced to the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Federer on Friday night, a vintage rematch that reinforced their head-to-head standings for now.

Nadal improved to 21-10 against his top rival, including wins all of their three matches this year. A close match came down to a few points, & Nadal received most of them.
