New York City FC-Red Bulls Preview

The New York Red Bulls already have two wins over crosstown rival New York City FC this season, & they may have some extra assist while going for a season sweep Sunday night.

The Red Bulls introduced designated player Gonzalo Veron during a press conference on Saturday, three days after a deal was announced to bring in the 25-year-old from San Lorenzo in the Argentine Primera Division.

Veron is eligible to make his debut Sunday at Red Bull Arena, yet the team wouldn't reveal its plans for him just yet.

p>"It's not approximately the fitness, it's approximately integrating him in a way to assist the team & moreover assist him be successful," coach Jesse Marsch said. "It's not always effortless in these summer windows to add players to the team & then have it go perfectly.

"In an ideal world, he's going on the field (Sunday) to assist us obtain a win."

The Red Bulls (9-6-6) moreover added former England international Shaun Wright-Phillips during the summer transfer window. Wright-Phillips, who has contributed an assist in two games played, is the brother of Bradley Wright-Phillips, the Red Bulls' leading goal scorer.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored three times in the first two games against NYCFC with the Red Bulls pulling out a 2-1 win on May 10 & a 3-1 victory on June 28.

Those two games provided six of the Red Bulls' 33 points, which have them sitting in playoff position in the Eastern Conference as they look to extend a four-game league unbeaten streak.

NYCFC (6-10-6) is currently out of the East's postseason picture with 24 points. It's conceded 11 goals in its last four games, going 1-2-1 in that stretch.

David Villa has scored nine goals in NYCFC's last seven games & three in the team's last two.

"We have 12 matches left & we have a guesstimate of how many points we'll need from those matches to qualify for the playoffs," coach Jason Kreis told the team's official website. "A lot of those matches are against Eastern Conference opponents above us in the table. All of these matches are gaining significance as the season winds down."

NYCFC moreover made some additions during the summer transfer window, bringing on defenders Andoni Iraola & Jefferson Mena & midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

Midfielder Frank Lampard moreover made his debut in NYCFC's last game, an 3-2 loss to Montreal on Aug. 1. The former Chelsea & Manchester City midfielder missed his first two potential debut dates with a lingering calf injury.
