'Chicharito' in strong Mexico Gold Cup squad

Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico named striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Real Sociedad star Carlos Vela & Watford fullback Miguel Layun in a strong 23-man squad for next month's Gold Cup.

Coach Miguel Herrera announced the squad the same night that a different roster — seen as a B-team — was playing Bolivia in the Copa America tournament in Chile, which ends July 4.

Herrera saved his biggest stars for the July 7-July 26 Gold Cup, which is hosted by defending champions the USA & is the marquee tournament of the Confederation of the North, Central American & Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

p>Eleven of the players picked for the Gold Cup ply their trade in Europe, including PSV Eindhoven playmaker Andres Guardado & Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos.

Striker Hernandez faces an uncertain summer having been on loan at Real Madrid from Manchester United.

Mexico have won six of the previous 12 Gold Cups & are in Group C with Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba & Guatemala.

Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa (Malaga/ESP), Moises Munoz (America), Jonathan Orozco (Monterrey)

Defenders: Francisco Javier Rodreguez (Cruz Azul), Miguel Angel Herrera (Pachuca), Diego Reyes (Porto/POR), Yasser Corona (Queretaro), Hector Moreno (Espanyol/ESP), Paul Aguilar (America), Miguel Layun (Watford/ENG), Jorge Torres Nilo (Tigres).

Midfielders: Hector Herrera (Porto/POR), Jonathan Dos Santos (Villarreal/ESP), Antonio Rios (Toluca), Jesus Duenas (Tigres), Andres Guardado (PSV Eindhoven/HOL), Jose Juan Vazquez (Leon), Jesus Corona (Twente/HOL), Carlos Esquivel (Toluca).

Strikers: Carlos Vela (Real Sociedad/ESP), Oribe Peralta (America), Giovani dos Santos (Villarreal/ESP), Javier Hernandez (Real Madrid/ESP).
