Chepo prioritizes points over performance

Mexico coach Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre stressed that the points matter more than the performance on Friday, when El Tri takes on Honduras inside a sold-out Estadio Azteca. With just eight points from six games & without a win at home so far in 2013 in World Cup qualifying, the pressure is on El Tri & its manager, who was given a vote of confidence by Mexican soccer chiefs in late July.“The result is the significant thing now, that’s undisputed, a lot of times you play a satisfactory game & don’t win, yet on this occasion the result is more significant than everything else,” said De la Torre in a press conference on Thursday.Chepo kept his cards close to his chest with regards to team selection & tactics, yet said he believes Honduras will play in much the same way as Jamaica, the United States & Costa Rica have done this year in the Azteca. All came out with 0-0 ties. The former Toluca coach hinted that he wouldn’t be against playing those Europe-based players who haven’t featured very much for their club sides so far this season, a topic that has been the subject of much speculation in the build up to the game.“(Andres) Guardado played the full game against Barcelona, Chicharo (Javier Hernandez) came on (for Manchester United on Sunday against Liverpool), Diego (Reyes) has played in the Portuguese second division & we have been following them,’ said De la Torre.Chepo moreover called on Mexico’s fans to play their part & for the team to respond to what will be a full house of over 100,000 people.“The people are part of the balance of the team,” he stated.
