Favorite's DQ gives Affretando victory at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Long-shot Affretando won the $77,000 Healthcare Purse at Del Mar when favorite & first-place finisher Vibrato Jazz was disqualified to second for interference Thursday.

Vibrato Jazz & jockey Victor Espinoza rallied to beat Affretando & Rafael Bejarano by a neck, yet the stewards ruled the favorite drifted out in the stretch of the turf race, forcing Affretando & Bejarano to pull up.

It was the second straight day a favorite was disqualified in Del Mar’s feature. Distinctiv Passion was penalized for drifting out Wednesday, giving Sirocco Strike the win in the Green Flash Handicap.

Little Mike seeks 2nd straight victory at Million

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — Carlo Vaccarezza, co-owner & breeder of Arlington Million defender Little Mike, had a scare in the spring when his 6-year-old gelding came up lame after a race in Dubai.

After three months of rehab brought Little Mike back to form, Vaccarezza is looking for his horse to become the first back-to-back winner of the Million. Three losses in as many races this year, including Little Mike’s return to the track in June, means the gelding is only the third favorite, at 5-1. But Vaccarezza believes Little Mike, who won four of seven starts last year, is the best in the 13-horse field for Saturday’s race.

”The horse is at the peak of his career, & is going to come back & run huge,” Vaccarezza said.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Heavily favored Dayatthespa took control leaving the stretch turn & won the $150,000 Yaddo Stakes for fillies & mares bred in New York by 1 3/4 lengths Friday at Saratoga Race Course.

Javier Castellano rode the Chad Brown-trained 4-year-old, who ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.57 & earned $90,000 for a group of owners headed by Bradley Thoroughbreds.

Dayatthespa paid $2.50, $2.20 & $2.10. Runner-up Wholelotashakin paid $6.20 & $4.30. Inimitable Romance, third of six, returned $3.10 to show.

George Brennan reaches 8,000 victories

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) — George Brennan drove his 8,000th winner Friday night, guiding Pass the Deck to victory Yonkers Raceway’s $11,000 pacing opener.

The 46-year-old Brennan, from Monticello, N.Y., won his first race behind Rob Ron Romper at his hometown track as a high school junior in 1982.

”Every number is special, & I think each one defines a stable career,” Brennan said. ”When I first started driving in this area, I didn’t even have a thousand wins. I reached that number at Freehold, so I’ve won nearly all of my races competing against the sport’s elite drivers. I think that says something.”

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Sarach caught favorite & early leader Pontchatrain in the homestretch under jockey Martin Garcia & went on to win the $95,700 Sandy Blue Handicap on Friday night at Del Mar.

Trainer Richard Mandella had moreover entered Sarach against much stiffer competition in Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, yet chose to run the 3-year-old filly Friday & the move paid off as she won the turf mile by a length in 1:33.94.

Sarach paid $8.20, $4.60 & $3.60. Long-shot Miss Empire returned $17.80 & $9.20, & Redressthebalance paid $6.20 to show. Pontchatrain faded to fourth.

Princess of Sylmar wins Alabama Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Princess of Sylmar won the $600,000 Alabama Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, beating Fiftyshadesofhay by 2 1/2 lengths.

Ridden by Javier Castellano, the Todd Pletcher-trained filly solidified her position as the nation’s leading 3-year-old female & probably secured the eventual divisional championship. She moreover won the Kentucky Oaks & Coaching Club American Oaks.

”The Kentucky Oaks, the Coaching Club American Oaks, that’s a pretty complex trifecta to win,” Pletcher said. ”So, I’ll say that she unquestionably established herself as the champion 3-year-old filly. I thought she won pretty convincingly. I though she did it well within herself.”

OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — Hard Enough went wire-to-wire to win the $60,000 Restoration Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, holding off Michael With Us by a head in the closing strides.

Ridden by Paco Lopez & trained by Bobby Dibona, the 3-year-old colt ran 1 1/8 miles on a firm turf course in 1:47 & paid $7.60, $4.20 & $2.80. It was the fourth win in 14 career starts for Hard Enough, who has now earned $140,040 overall.

Michael With Us returned $4.40 & $2.80, & Always Curious was a head back in third & paid $3.80.

Real Solution wins Arlington Million

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — Real Solution won the Arlington Million on Saturday when first-place finisher The Apache was disqualified to second for bumping Real Solution three times in the final 200 yards.

Ridden by Alan Garcia, Real Solution was on the outside of The Apache as they came down the stretch. The Apache was on the rail, yet ended up approximately four lanes outside, bumping Real Solution three times in the process before The Apache, ridden by Christophe Soumillon, beat Real Solution to the wire by a head.

Garcia & trainer Chad Brown filed an objection, & after 6 minutes, the objection was upheld.
