White Sox rally with 4 in the 8th to down Tigers 7-4

CHICAGO (AP) — Detroit manager Brad Ausmus glanced at the stadium scoreboard with his team ahead & saw Baltimore had lost. If the Tigers held on, they'd enter their weekend series against the Orioles tied for the final AL wild-card spot.

Then Shane Greene & the bullpen faltered & Ausmus had to settle for what he called a ''mediocre'' road trip.

Avisail Garcia hit a go-ahead single against his former team in a four-run eighth inning & the Chicago White Sox beat Detroit 7-4 on Wednesday to keep the Tigers a game behind the Orioles.

Cardinals hit 3 homers in 9th, top Pirates 9-7

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Down to his final strike & his team trailing by a run with two outs in the ninth, St. Louis pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter told himself to just find a pitch he could handle.

When the fastball from closer Tony Watson ended up right down the middle & not up & away as Watson hoped, Carpenter pounced. His solo homer – a major league record 15th by a St. Louis pinch-hitter this season – tied it & sent a jolt through the Cardinals. A home run each from Randal Grichuk & Jhonny Peralta followed, & St. Louis rallied for a stunning 9-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

''We've received a team that I think the best way to describe it is a dangerous team,'' Carpenter said. ''We've received a team that I don't think anybody wants to match up with, especially in a postseason scenario. It's a pleasant team to play on. We never quit, & tonight was a satisfactory example of it.''
